I'll start this review by saying that I'm an adult who enjoys reading young adult books. I've read hundreds of books for this age category and feel that The Tapestry books are near the top of my list of exceptional stories. Henry H. Neff has created engaging characters with a strong plot that's kept me reading well past the first book. (I'm currently on the 4th book of this series and can't wait to see how all the threads get woven together in the end.) While Max may not seem like the strongest lead character in the first book, I loved watching him grow into his gifts as his story progresses.

The author has an extraordinary and vivid imagination. He's created a cast of characters that you will fall in love with and care about. Some of my favorites are:
Max's roommate, David Menlo. He is a rich character filled with profound gifts and ancient wisdom.
Max's charge, Nick, the last lymrill in the world. He plays a very key role in book 3.
Bea Shrope, aka Mum, the reformed hag who must sniff children so she isn't tempted to eat them.
Agent Cooper, whose scarred face frightens the students. He seems very cold and calculating until you get to know him.

This list can go on and on. So many characters add so much to this story. I highly recommend reading this series. As a reference, some of my other favorite young adult series are: Fablehaven, Ranger's Apprentice, Farworld, The Beyonders, The Heir Chronicles, Septimus Heap, The Unwanteds, A Wrinkle in Time, The Wizard of Oz and many more.

The Hound of Rowan Book One of The Tapestry Henry H Neff 9780375838941 Books Reviews

The author has created a well rounded alternative world that is complex and exciting while maintaining its own internal credibility. I found that I was drawn to the characters and as they built in the story they became more complex. In some cases the 'evil' character developed nuances which made them much more interesting and this complexity was also developed for the 'good' characters. The result is a tale with more depth than frankly I expected. I suppose one gauge of interest is that I promptly purchased the next two books in the series and am in the midst of book three now. For those who wonder if a series of 4 books is going to wear thin, or be packed with filler, this isn't the case with this series. BTW I ran out of interest before Harry Potter books quit coming out as in my opinion they were needlessly long and he spent too much time whining about his lot. This series is tightly scripted and gets more complex as it goes with some marvellous reversals in perception. You do have to remind yourself that the main character is a young teenager in violent, emotional times not a wise adult who has experience that says "don't do that for God's sake" but that's a small caveat.
Neff's best series. I really liked this as a first book to a great series and whoever is starting on this one should feel fortunate that the 2nd and 3rd are already out, as the story continues to build it is definately one of those that has you eager for the next book release.
For those that are considering starting a new fantasy fiction series I can say that the entire series is worth the full 5 stars. I enjoyed it so much that, had I reviewed it before reading the 2nd and 3rd, I would probably have given it 5 stars. I only gave the Hound of Rowan 4 stars since, in the books that follow it, Neff has shown how he can be such a cleaver and creative writer that it makes this one seem that he could have added just a bit more to this first book to get it to the level of a creativity and intrest of those that come after (but not a boring book by any means, still a great story!) Also love the tie-ins with Celtic folk lore.

Although the main character, Max does end up going to a school for magic there are not enough similarities to call it a Harry Potter knock off. Neff can hold his own on talented storytelling and also represents by including some of his own illistrations. I actually liked it just as much, if not more, than Rowling's series. (But that could just be that I have reached my saturation point with Pottermania.) Overall, the beginning gets you into the action pretty quick and will keep you hooked until the end.

NOTE TO PARENTS Unless you're one of those that doesn't like the whole kids using magic thing, there is nothing in this book to worry about your kids reading. I always appreciate a writer that is talented enough that they don't have to use teenage hormones to sell thier stories and I look for those series that I can recommend to the YAs in my family as well as my friend's children without dissapointing parents that maintain high standards and morals for their youth. This book and series has received some of the best reviews and feedback from parents and thier children alike.
I loved this book! Granted, some parts seemed a little unnecessary, but overall it's really good. I didn't like that there was some crazy love triangle type thing between Max, Julie, and Sarah. I personally like the idea of Max and Julie together, but that's just me. The characters are lovable and I absolutely love the part where they get to meet all the charges and Nick picks Max as his caretaker! At first I hoped that Max would get something like one of the fauns or maybe the ulu, but Max and Nick (a Black Forest Lymrill) are perfect for each other and I LOVE ALL the different personalities of the characters and their charges. I also like that there's a lot of cute little filler chapters and there's also some moments where you have to reread because you aren't exactly sure what just happened because some of it's pretty crazy. I'm not usually one for such a dramatic book but I got hooked fast and this is now one of my favourite series!
