Let me start out by saying I adore Kristen Ashley. I found her just two weeks ago, and already I've read the Rock Chick series (killer) and bits and pieces from her other series. Her writing is detailed and just fun, her characters are lovable and the action just keeps coming.

So when I picked up Lacybourne Manor, I started reading with this mindset . . . I have to say it was not what I was expecting.

Basically this story is about a pair of star crossed lovers from 1522. They were murdered on their wedding night and a good witch, who saw their True Love, bound their souls together so they could be reincarnated and find each other again. This happens in the form or Colin and Sibyl, who then go on to fight the evil threatening to tear them apart and consummate their love.

For the main characters, Colin and Sibyl, I have to say I was sadly underwhelmed. Its not to say that they were not likable, because they were. Colin is a strong alpha male with money to burn and trust issues, while Sibyl is a sweet heroine who would give you the shirt of her back. When I first started reading I actually really liked them, but as I continued reading I just felt it was a repeating performance of the same misunderstanding and drama. As the story progressed they hit a plateau and you don't really see their emotions develop after a certain point. Not to say their love isn't sweet in its way, but I prefer more substance. And to be quite honest, I started wanting to slap Colin's ruthless alpha rear around, and then start in on Sibyl for being so easy. The secondary characters were also ok, but they just didn't have the same impact as characters from other Kristen Ashley series.

I think the plot was a bit slow, which is not bad if you like that, however I was expecting more action. It had its funny moments to be sure, and it had a few twists and bumps interspersed through the romance, but I struggled to read to the end. I had to restrain myself from just flipping to the last few pages to see how it ends and get it over with. The absence of a flesh and blood bad guy until the last ten pages or so irritated me. The antagonist really had no effect on the plot other than to bring in the magic element and present a few (minor) obstacles for the star crossed lovers. I'm sorry to say this, but it just felt the story had no depth.

The writing itself was good, but at times the sentences were a bit jumbled, so I actually had to go back and reread. There were a few words that were misspelled as well, but overall it was well written. I think the sheer length of the story is a point against the book. A lot of Kristen Ashley's books are long, and when you're really liking the story that's great because you don't want it to end, but in this case 433 pages was just to much.

But, I have to reiterate that I am comparing this book to her other series, particularly the Rock Chick series, so my views is biased. Its just not my cup of tea, so in saying this, I would recommend Lacybourne Manor to anyone who likes steady romance with not a lot of action, a bit of magic, and reincarnated star crossed lovers.

Lacybourne Manor is one of the Ghosts and Reincarnation series books. It is the third book but they are all independent standalone books so you can read each in any order you wish. This book is about Colin Morgan and Sibyl Godwin of present time, but also Royce Morgan and Beatrice Godwin of 500 years ago. Lacybourne Manor is more along the Reincarnation side than Ghosts. It has witchcraft and spells and protections and fate and destiny. It has star crossed lovers and a plot of death and revenge. It has two people fated to meet as reincarnated lovers and break a centuries old curse. There is twists and turns and love and drama and angst galore. It is a wild ride and I enjoyed it immensely. Lacybourne Manor is told in 3rd person and does just a bit of jumping from present day to past.

I will give one spoiler because it is pretty much my only hard no- animal cruelty. The dog, Mallory, and the horse, Mallory, are killed near the end of the book but hang in there because the author makes it right by the very end.

I recommend Lacybourne Manor as I do the prior two books that I have read in the series, book 1, Penmort Castle; book 2, Sommersgate House. I look forward to reading books 4 and 5.

Audible I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. The narrator did a great job. She was easy to understand and pleasant to listen to. She has distinct voices for all of the characters making it easy to follow what was happening in group settings. I recommend this as an audio book.

I thought I knew this story, until I read it.

Colin Morgan has been told his entire life that he is the exact image of his long dead relative Royce and he knew all of the stories surrounding the lovers killed on the day of their wedding destined to return to this world someday. He even believed in them for a time but he lost all hope of that a long time ago. For Colin had been born with a broken heart, the broken heart of a long-dead warrior, a warrior who lost his love and his life at near the same exact time. He has become jaded and cold. He can't see the good in people anymore, if he ever did.

Sibyl has lived with her head in the clouds for most of her life. She has dreams of finding the one man that she is sure is supposed to fit into her life. She has even had dreams of him. But when both Colin and Sibyl meet what should have been easy turns into a fiasco of epic proportions. I loved their first meeting. Sweet Baby Jesus, was it one for the record books! I loved everything about it. Strangely, and distressingly, she felt like she’d been in this exact position before, facing off against him. And losing. This feeling was not a little familiar, but a lot, like it didn’t happen once but repeatedly. And it was bizarre, frightening and, lastly, bizarrely, frighteningly reassuring.

Colin is convinced that Sibyl is a con artist just out for his money and she is pretty sure he is slightly deranged. As they stumble and fall together in some weird twisted and possible slightly cruel ways each starts to open up a little to the other and the closer they get to each other the more danger they are in because history it seems it doomed to repeat itself and they didn’t make it out alive 500 years ago.

It really takes a while for their relationship to shift from suspicion distrust.

I definitely loved Sibyl’s family and her mom especially cracked me up.
“We aren’t going to see Colin until Wednesday, you’re surely not going to allow him to leave town without an uninterrupted evening of privacy, are you?”
Sibyl clamped her mouth shut.
“Give her a good tumble, Colin,” Mags urged audaciously, pushing a stiff-with-humiliated-fury Sibyl out the door ahead of Colin. “She’ll need it to keep her in good spirits for the next couple of days.”

I will say the culmination at the end was really my favorite part. Shift between now and then seeing who/what else was reincarnated and helping out with this story.

Mallory pulled out of his early evening nap, got to his feet far more gracefully than he had ever done in his whole doggie life and he walked into the house, following the last person of the party to enter as they all went in to escape the oncoming storm. He walked directly to his master and mistress’s bedroom and sat properly, not lounged, at the door. And thus he stood sentry.

For me the ending was intense and I really loved it all jumping between here and there, this and that with all the little added in snippets and it was intense.

The epilogue totally killed me and that is why I love KA books because no matter what else happens I get so caught up in them that my emotions sway easily and she can pull me to the verge of tears either in happiness or sadness in an instant.
