The Chronicles of Koa Netherworld Volume 1 K N Lee Ann Wicker 9781484993255 Books
K.N.Lee’s first volume of her “The Chronicles of Koa” trilogy is an enjoyable book which blends several genres into one place; fantasy, vampires, action, etc.; and it can easily have its reader engrossed so they’ll like to keep on turning its pages.Unfortunately, there are several factors which prevent me from giving it 5 Stars instead of the 3 Stars I have.
To begin with, the book needs some serious editing since page after page almost each sentence begins with Koa’s name, another character’s name, or a pronoun for a character. Don’t just take my word for it; just flip through the pages of the preview for the book.
I also had a problem that the right margin for the book had not been justifies. This caused the end of each sentence to end in a different position, making it harder to read.

I received an ARC of Netherworld (The Chronicles of Koa #1) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

From the beginning of Netherworld, I was hooked. It had a fast paced beginning and easily kept my interest. I pretty much knocked the book out in four hours and only really paused it to make dinner. As soon as I finished it I purchased the sequel on my kindle.
There are a lot of fascinating elements and I feel like this was a really fun paranormal novel. It had multiple breeds of vampires, demons, angels, and some new creatures as well. I liked how it had the human world and the netherworld. The descriptions were pretty well done and I could envision quite a bit of it. I ADORED her mother and the twist with that. I loved the idea that at the beginning of the story Koa (our lead) was already in love. It was not the typical meet, hate each other, fall in love, confession time that you usually find in pretty much all YA and romance novels. It was more about why they weren't already together and that struggle instead. Not what you usually find.
Now on the romance note, it also brings me to my biggest problem with this series. The dreaded love triangle. If anyone has read some of my more colorful reviews they will know I hate love triangles with a burning passion. Throughout the whole book I thought I had avoided it and then WHAM-BAM last three chapters or so and love triangle. Now I will give Lee credit that it is not typically how a love triangle is introduced...but it is still there. Now on the flip side of this triangle...I'm ALMOST glad to have a triangle because I can't stand the one she was in love with. Halston. My other problem with this series.
Halston the amazing. Halston the gorgeous. Halston the perfect. Who is clearly not perfect. <Spoiler>Now I get that he is an angel</spoiler> and I barely call that a spoiler because it was blatantly obvious from the beginning; however, if he was described as perfect ONE MORE TIME I was ready to throw my kindle. Which I would rather not do because it was expensive. Her descriptions of him were nauseating. His perfect hair, his perfect smile, his perfect outfit, how sexy he was when he breathed. (Last one I may have made up). I just want to meet the real Jax in the next book. He was way more interesting.
Now I liked Koa, she felt pretty real. Now she started out pretty badass, then kind of turned into a simpering lovesick fool anytime which she was around Halston which was vaguely annoying. I mean she founds out what he's done to her (which I hope there is more to in the future books but still relatively important) and just insta-forgives him. At least have a bit of a struggle with your love for him and what he's done to you vs. for you. Jeez. Hopefully with the introduction of Jax she may change a bit as the books progress. Ah how high my hopes are. Please don't dash them K.N. Lee. She also had a bit of the typical YA heroine "I know what's best for me, don't tell me what to do, I'm going to go out and make terrible decisions!" phase but I guess she has to grow. I did like how there were characters stronger than her and we avoided the invincible perfect heroine. She makes mistakes and I like that.
The plot was interesting, I instantly want to delve into the next one. I am curious on how many books while be in the chronicles of Koa. Either way there is a lot that needs to happen and while the ending felt a bit abrupt I felt satisfied with all that was put into the first book. I enjoyed the writing style, my only gripe being that she used their names very often. Halston did this, Halston did that. I would have liked a bit more variety. It was a very quick read, I was drawn in and I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I expect good things from the next one.
Actual rating 2.5 Stars, rounded up to 3 Stars.
I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it. This review MAY contain spoilers. Read at your own risk.
I really enjoyed this story as a whole, but I had some issues with it as well.
Starting off with what this book does well, it has a very unique take on vampires and Nephilim. I can honestly say that I haven't read anything resembling this world that Lee has created before in other books. The concept of the story is very good and I think with some polishing it could be incredible.
I felt like this book was way too short and lacked detail. It felt like the bare bones of what a book should be. It has the main concept, the characters, and the plot, but it lacks the details needed to fully understand the scope of the story being told. This also brings me to the characters. While I liked these characters, I didn't love them. I didn't feel a connection to them that would make me fall in love with them. At times I didn't feel like I knew them at all. This is where details would have been most advantageous in the story. As far as the world-building goes, more details is never a bad thing in a fantasy book. There were points in the book, especially when the main characters enter the Netherworld, that were confusing to follow. The author was telling instead of showing. An instance of this is when Lee tells the readers that the main character can fly. There is no explanation as to why, nor is there a description of her attempting it. She just flies. It didn't go into any details regarding this power that the main character has. Every time she flew I just pictured Superman, but I know where Superman's power comes from so his power of flying doesn't confuse me. Every time she flew it was very unconvincing and ridiculous to me. Details are the backbone of a story. Without them, the story falls flat and doesn't engage the reader.
I found the narrative a bit choppy and unconvincing at times. I also think that this book could use a serious sit down with an editor. There were misspellings and mispunctuation galore, and sometimes there was even the wrong form of a word used. While these things may not bother some people, they sadly impacted the enjoyment of the story for me.
The ending was a bit abrupt. I wouldn't really call it a cliffhanger though because there wasn't anything really hanging in the balance. I think that I would have preferred a cliffhanger, to be honest. The story just stops. I kept scrolling through my e-reader thinking that I didn't have the complete file downloaded to my kindle app.
This book (and this series) has great potential. It definitely has some missed opportunities in regard to the world building and character growth, but the story is original and catching. I think that with some refining this story could be so much more. I will definitely be continuing the series. I know that this book is the first by this author, and I think that over time her writing can only get better. I am excited to see what else K.N. Lee has to offer. I would recommend this series to those that enjoy action-packed urban fantasy stories.
